Sensory-Processing Modifications For RVs

Those with sensory-processing issues can still enjoy a cozy RV vacation, especially with a few tweaks to the camper itself. Read on to learn more about making RV trips more accessible and enjoyable for those with sensory-processing issues.

Comfort While RV Traveling

Travelers who have autism, Down’s syndrome, chronic pain conditions, depression or anxiety may have sensory-processing issues that need to be addressed for their comfort. Some chronic pain conditions like fibromyalgia can cause light and temperature sensitivity, while autism can make loud noises and rough textures intolerable.

Any individual with these conditions may experience hot and cold differently than a neurotypical or able-bodied traveler would, and they may find lights to be brighter, sounds to be louder, odors to be stronger and textures to be rougher. For the traveler’s comfort, these issues must be amended.

Addressing Light Sensitivity

  • Put up blackout curtains, especially in the bedroom, to block out sunlight and bright campground lights or car headlights.
  • Add dimmer switches to interior lighting to create a softer light.

Addressing Sound Sensitivity

  • Heavy drapes on all windows can muffle outdoor sounds.
  • A white-noise machine can dull sounds.
  • More insulation on the RV’s walls can help make the interior more soundproof.

Addressing Temperature Sensitivity

  • Installing a climate-control system on the RV will allow the traveler to make the space as warm or cool as they need it to be, regardless of the temperature outside.
  • Insulation can help with temperature control.
  • Fans and space heaters are simple ways to address the temperature within the RV.

Addressing Texture Sensitivity

  • Remove furnishings that have irritating or rough textures and replace them with textures that the traveler finds pleasing will help them to be more comfortable.
  • Alternatively, add coverings to the furnishings with textures more comfortable to the traveler.
